General Living Costs For A Child

A regular monthly gift of £20 - $40 would cover the general living costs of one child at Hoay Maw. This is equivalent to the cost of a Mars bar a day or a couple of take-away meals a month. Turn your take-away into a give-away and make a difference in the life of a child.

Why Support A Child?

We try to be flexible in the way that supporters can get involved. Some people prefer to invest in sustainable projects. Some are happy to make a general donation and feel that they are contributing to the overall work. Others may like to make a more personal connection. If you have young children whom you would like to get involved, it may be particularly helpful to "put a face" to a work that is going on the other side of the world.

Why Support A Child At Hoay Maw?

Many organisations operate different approaches to child support and we would like you to be aware of the distinctive aspects of supporting a child at Hoay Maw. We hope that the following sections will provide useful information. Should you have further questions, please feel free to Contact us.

"Orphans"

The children at Hoay Maw each have their own story. Many of the children have had extremely difficult circumstances in their lives. The priority of the Hoay Maw Children's Home is to provide care for orphaned or abandoned children. In many countries, including Thailand, the term "orphan" can be used very loosely. In the case of Hoay Maw, this means that a child doesn't have a mum or a dad or a relative or community to take care of them.

Some programs intentionally do not support children in an orphan care setting. In those cases, the support is aimed at development within a community setting. The money given is a supplement to the basic income of a poor family. For the children at Hoay Maw, there is no family and no existing basic level of livelihood.

Although they have been severely disadvantaged, we believe in the children at Hoay Maw and it is our desire and intention to work to equip them to grow up to become fully contributing members of their community and nation.

A "Hand-Up", Not A "Hand-Out"

Some organisations seek multiple sponsors per child in order to cover the total costs of living. We don't want the children at Hoay Maw to feel that they are "a charity" or that they are wholly dependant on outside supporters. At Hoay Maw, they have already achieved a great deal in terms of developing projects through which they can help themselves as well as learning important skills for the future.

The children and staff at Hoay Maw work very hard to make the most of the very little they have. Whilst we want to encourage the children to develop vocational skills and be self-sufficient, we also want them to have energy and time to devote to completing their education as well as to have the opportunity to just "be a child".

We believe that care of vulnerable children is part of God's heart for the church to play their part. God has a plan and a future for each of these children and as a body, we can help them reach their full God-given potential.

Your Support Will Go Directly to Help the Children

The Oliver family support their own personal costs through software work.

The staff at Hoay Maw work for a very low level of support and this is presently covered by specific supporters.

There is an unavoidable level of administrative costs involved in processing donations:

  • International monetary transfer. (Donations will be bundled together into a single international transfer so that the cost of the transfer is kept to a minimum).
  • PayPal commission.
  • Currency Conversion.
  • UK project account service charge.

The above costs will vary depending on the mode of payment. We make every effort to direct people to the most efficient payment method for their circumstances.

If you are able to make a gift aid declaration, then the tax reclaimed will more than cover the above costs.

The remaining money will all go directly towards the living costs of the children.

Will My Money Provide For An Individual Child?

It is NOT our intention for an individual supporter's money to provide exclusively for an individual child, especially at this stage where there is a small base of supporters and many more children. Support money will be shared among the children in order to gradually improve the basic quality of life for all of the children at Hoay Maw.

Will I be Able to Write to An Individual Child?

We are happy to provide supporters with a photo and some background information about an individual child. We hope that this will help you pray for, understand and relate to the children and work at Hoay Maw. It would also be possible for you to send a photo and/or general greeting to the children at Hoay Maw.

There are some reasons why we are not able to facilitate communication with an individual child at this time:

  • As said earlier, with a small base of supporters and with many children, it would be awkward if some children were aware that they had a supporter and others did not.
  • The work involved in translating communications would require the use of valuable funds where there is currently a priority to address more basic needs of the children such as nutrition and health care.
  • We would like to encourage supporters to engage with the overall ethos and work at Hoay Maw which goes hand-in-hand with being aware of the needs of an individual child.
  • If we were to initiate a two-way relationship between an individual child and a supporter, it could lead to difficulties should a supporter find that they are unable to continue with financial contributions. This could also put some people off getting involved in the first place.

Will I Have to Commit to Continuing Support Indefinitely?

We would like to stress that a supporter would be completely free to cease financial contributions at any point. Your support for any period will be much appreciated.

If a supporter would like to receive a photo and details of an individual child to "get to know" and pray for them, please inform us if you would prefer a girl or boy and the approximate age (5-18 yrs).
